Zian Kiteboarding kites and Lieuwe Kiteboards, both Dutch manufactures of high end kiteboarding equipment, approached me to design a special edition collaboration board which was to be used by their respective team riders and members of marketing staff. The brief was to hero the Zian branding on the Lieuwe boards so that when action photos of the board being ridden reached magazines and forums the Zian brand was the main focus.

After developing a set of style routes with the clients the favoured option was one that focussed heavily on tribal designs. The origins of these ancient styles held a few elements which are closely linked to kiteboarding on whole. The appreciation of mother nature, the sun, the sea, the wind and ultimately the tribal designs of the people who are widely believed to have invented surfing.
Another key factor in this design route was the amount of wood grain which could be seen through the design, a main trademark feature of Lieuwe Kiteboards. That coupled up with the Lieuwe branded diagonal colour panel on the top sheet brought an even balance between the two brands.
